In August 2026 Parliament passed legislation making the $20,000 instant asset write-off permanent for businesses turning over under $10 million. Permanent certainty changes buying behaviour, and equipment purchases run on finance.
Under year-to-year extensions, businesses rushed June purchases and then froze. A permanent threshold turns that spike into steady, year-round demand for vehicles, machinery and equipment under and around the $20,000 mark, and most of it is financed. Every accountant in the country now has a standing reason to tell clients that replacing ageing equipment is tax-effective.
Borrowers arrive knowing the tax angle. The broker's job is structure and speed, not persuasion.
The threshold applies per asset, so multiple purchases each under $20,000 can all qualify. Clients rarely know this; accountants and brokers who mention it write more.
The measure awaits royal assent. Keep claims dated and conditional until it is law in force, then move.
Our asset and equipment finance leads capture the asset type, amount and timeframe from buyers already in market.
